With the beginning of summer in Canberra, everyone is looking for some respite from the heat. And what better way to cool off, than to take a dip in highly refreshing waters.

As most Australians will be heading to the beach, Canberrans need not worry, about the lack thereof. Here are five hidden wonders around Tuggeranong, where you can enjoy a splash with your family and friends.

Cotter Bend: Situated hardly at a 15-minute drive away from Western Creek, the Cotter Bend is a great place if you want to go for a swim. It is the meeting point of the Cotter River and Paddy’s River, which is surrounded by grassy areas and a playground, making it a perfect picnic spot for family gatherings or a barbeque party with friends.

Casuarina Sands: A few minutes down the road from Cotter Bend, you’ll find yourself at the banks of Casuarina Sands. With the lack of actual beaches in Canberra, this place comes close. Situated along the banks of the Murrumbidgee River, Casuarina Sands is an ideal place for picnics, swimming, and even fishing!

Angle Crossing: Another hidden gem situated along the southern side of the Murrumbidgee River, is angle crossing. A swimming hole, that makes a great choice for a quiet camping day or kayaking down the river. It is probably the most scenic hideaway for relaxation and enjoying with friends or family. With two swimming holes, one that’s shallower than the other making it good for kids and new swimmers, and lots of shaded areas, families are sure to come back here for more.

Pine Island Reserve: A little closer to home, situated near the Tuggeranong Town Center, lies a swimming spot, that is a great place for those who don’t want to travel much. The Pine island reserve with electric barbeques, a large playground and it’s proximity to the town centre, means you can go on a shopping spree and then come here to take a refreshing dip in the water. That sounds like a perfect weekend to me!

Gibraltar Creek and Falls: A few minutes’ drives from Corin Road lie the most beautiful, secluded waterfalls, that make for a perfect camping spot for the adventurer in you. At the base of Gibraltar falls, there are special picnic tables, arrangements for barbeques and a large camping area where you can spend your day lazing around. And to beat the heat, just jump into the swimming hole and be submerged in the water for as long as you want!
